Crunch Time for Old Fries in Season Opener of Printpoint Queensland Masters Surfing Circuit

Gold Coast, Australia (Tuesday 17th March, 2009): THE old fries of the Queensland surfing scene will blow off their competitive cobwebs this weekend, with the opening round of the 2009 Printpoint Queensland Masters Surfing Circuit hitting the Gold Coast.

After a four-month break, a re-energized field will go toe-to-toe for an early lead in the race for prestigious Queensland titles along with a place in the Queensland team to contest the Australian Open Surf Masters titles in 2010.

The senior men (over 28), O/35 men, O/40 men, O/45 men, 0/50 men and the O/55 men divisions will be decided from a qualifying field representing the best part of the Queensland coastline.

Given the success of last year’s circuit, contest organisers at Surfing Queensland have again been flooded with entries into the season-opening tournament with almost 60 competitors set to line-up across six separate divisions.

Surfing Queensland Event Manager Scott Gillies says the three-event circuit is building momentum with an increased interest from the senior statesmen of surfing.

“The circuit is really thriving with a record number of competitors entering into the circuit last year,” he said.

“Hopefully that’ll continue throughout the year and we’ll see another great circuit.”

Friendship will yet again take a backseat in the highly-competitive, blue ribbon senior men’s division, with the usual suspects of Kyle Robinson (Clear Island Waters), Peter Boyd (Moffat Beach) and Mark Richardson (Palm Beach) donning competition rash vests.

But they’ll have their work cut out for them with Terry Landsberg (Currumundi), Danny Muskens (Coolangatta) and Blair Semple (Elanora) also lining up in the division.

The surfing action will be just as impressive in the 0/35’s with Boyd and Robinson entering in a second division.

Adding to event’s impressive line-up are Chris Brooks (Currumbin), James Ellen (Mudgeeraba) and Marty Peters (Broadbeach) in the O/40s, David Cervi (Sunrise Beach), David Masters (Mooloolaba) and Paul Fisher (Buderim) in the O/45s, along with Neville Williams (Marcoola), Peter Buckley (Palm Beach) and Ross Marshall (Cabarita) in the 0/50’s.

They’ll be no love lost in the 55’s with William Lowe (Nth Stradbroke), John Jenkins (Mt Coolum) and Eddie Valladares (Currumbin) confirming their entry.

Also up for grabs is the Toohey’s Extra Dry ‘Wave of the Weekend’ prize granted to the surfer who scores the highest individual wave score of the event. The lucky winner will walk away with four cartons of the clean crisp taste of Toohey’s Extra Dry.

The two-day tournament will be run from Saturday 21st March till Sunday 22nd March, 2009.

The Printpoint Queensland Masters Surfing Circuit is a fully mobile event and does have the option of going mobile to the best beach-breaks from Southport Spit to Duranbah.
