1000 Surfboard Graveyard

Chris Anderson, a graphic design student from Wollongong, is collecting 1000 old and broken surfboards to create a Surfboard Graveyard as an awareness campaign about the unsustainable materials and wastage of surfboards.
Aiming to collect 1000 broken surfboards from members of the community and installing them like headstones at a graveyard on Garie Beach, the installation will be photographed as an image for an ad campaign. People can receive lots of rewards, even limited edition artists books and custom surfboards for supporting the project on POZIBLE.
Garie Beach is located in the Royal National Park between Southern Sydney and Wollongong, and Chris will be working with the rangers to legally install and photograph the surfboards on the beach.
He aims to illustrate that surfboards require a large amount of non-renewable resources and energy to produce, yet they are generally not reused or recycled in any way.
The world wide surfing population is reported to be between 17 million (Surfing Australia) and 23 million (International Surfing Association) and the vast majority of broken surfboards are taken straight to landfill where they often leach toxic chemicals.
The campaign aims to provoke conversation and generate new ideas for managing this waste that has in many ways has gone somewhat unnoticed due to the stereotypical environmental image of surfing.
Conversations and potential support from Surfrider Foundation Australia have proven further that something better should be done with unusable surfboards rather than dumping them straight in landfill.
The project is currently seeking approval for a Guinness World Record for "The most broken surfboards at a beach".
